Black Marlin Fishing - You'll Find Nothing More Pleasurable

By Ben Pate

The Black marlin is a premiere game fish for sport fishermen. Recently the black marlin, which was previously known as Makaira indica, was re-classified as Istiompax indica. Although most commonly associated with the blue marlin, genetically it is most similarly related to the striped/white marlin. This re-classification also links it more closely with sailfish. No matter the classification Black Marlin fishing is a popular recreational activity.

Compared To Blue Marlins

Compared to the Black Marlin fishing, black marlins have much more strength due to their solid frames. The have smaller dorsal fins and shorter bills which make them more agile in the water. Another way black marlin are different from other marlin is that their bill does not fold over when it is pressed. These are just some of the ways people can distinguish the two species from each other.

Predatory Fish

Known as being very predatory, black marlin have an extensive diet comprised of many different things. They love tuna, cuttlefish, and other crustaceans. They will pretty much eat any fish smaller than them. This leaves the black marlin with a very extensive menu to choose from as it is one of the larger fish in the sea.

Full Moon Fishing

Since they offer such an amazing fight for fishermen, black marlin are highly sought after the world over. Research has shown that, for whatever reason, black marlins are much easier to catch during a full moon. Some suggest this is because when there is a full moon fish swim up to the surface to find their food.

Warm Waters

Where can you find black marlin? They love to swim in warm water, so the indo-pacific oceans are a great place to start looking. They have also been spotted in Chile and in some parts of southern California. They like to swim just underneath the surface of the water. They also especially like to swim near underwater structures like coral reefs.

Fishing Tours

For the average fishermen it would be very hard to locate and catch one of these monstrous fish on your own. If you are serious about getting a black marlin, your best bet may be to hire an experienced fishing charter. They will be able to take you to where the fish are and give you the latest technology to improve your chances of landing one. Some black marlin can actually weigh up to 1,4000 pounds and grow to be fifteen feet in length. So, you may need some extra help reeling one of these fish on board. Surely, there is nothing more exciting in the world of fishing than catching a black marlin.
