Motorcycle Covers: High and Low Prices

By Amanda Weil

If you are looking to buy a motorcycle cover, it is a good idea to first decide how much money you intend to spend. In the over-$100 category, the styles, options, and add-ons are limitless, as is the cost. In the more realistic, under-$100 realm you should be able to get what you want, unless you have a collector's bike worth a ton of money. Most of us regular people do fine with the inexpensive covers, as they take care of our basic needs. A motorcycle cover will protect your bike from rain, heat, debris, thieves, and gravel. Because the buildup of dust, dirt, and grime is kept to a minimum, a motorcycle cover is a fantastic investment.

Several magazines and specialty websites rate covers based on numerous criteria. In the over-$100 category, both the Oxford Rainex and R&G's Superbike cover get perfect scores, so you cannot go wrong with a budget purchase. Do not forget to be meticulous about sizing your cover. Nearly all of the major manufacturers make covers for specific models, but you must consider add-ons as well. So, if you have added custom handlebars or a special seat, made allowances for items like that when you are sizing your purchase.

If you plan to spend more than $100, you have literally hundreds, if not thousands of choices. Keep things simple and opt for one of two covers in this price range. Nelson-Rigg's Falcon and the CycleShell are both good buys, but the Falcon is cheaper at $140, while the CycleShell will cost you around $350. If you want to pay more for other brands, that option is open to you. However, if you are looking to get the most holler for your dollar, stick to one of the two mentioned.

Accessories for a motorcycle cover are a category unto themselves. Think of them as accessories for accessories. The most important to consider are thing like straps, which come in both elastic and hook-and-loop varieties. Elastic ones are easier to handle, but hook-and-loop sets are stronger and thus resist wind much better.

Of all the features of a motorcycle cover, two of great importance are heat-resistance and waterproofing. If you live in a hot locale, make absolutely certain that your motorcycle cover has vents; otherwise, you are making a small problem into a big one. Waterproof covers are essential if your area gets a good amount of rain, so keep the local weather conditions in mind when you buy. If you are new to the state or city, ask some of the local motorcycle owners what types of covers they have and you will definitely get an earful. We all know that bike owners enjoy talking about their two-wheeled pride, so don't be shy about asking for free advice.
