What are 29er bikes and are they worth the investment?

By Scott E. Benson

There is a growing trend in recent years for twenty-nine inch wheel spans in mountain bikes, but the main question is are they really any better than the more common 26 inch? The majority of mountain bikes wheels have been 26 inches in diameter for years, so why mess with something that clearly works?

Twenty-six inch bicycles are seen as good all-rounders. They can combat most terrain with an impressive versatility. 29ers have more specifics areas that they particularly excel in. They deal with dips in the path incredibly well, absorbing the bump and creating a generally more comfortable ride. 26ers will only provide this when travelling over an obstacle at great speed, whereas slower acceleration often leads to an unstable and uncomfortable rider. Their tendency to decrease in momentum over bumpy terrain is also often worse than their twenty-nine inch counterpart.

They also produce greater acceleration with minimal effort and their larger wheel mass provides superior traction. This ensures a more stable and comfortable ride. To get an average bike to surpass these standards would mean parting with considerable amounts of money for a state of the art quality dual suspension number.

In general they are a bike designed for those of a taller stature. For those not blessed with the added inches, there may be certain sacrifices to consider when purchasing one. A higher headset may be required, same with the handlebar height. Longer top tubes may even be necessary. This means there will be fewer models to choose from.

Like anything else it is really down to personal preference to decide which size will best work for you. If you don't have the opportunity to road test both before settling, then think carefully about your target terrain, ability to control a larger model and the deciding factor of cost versus quality. 29ers are said to produce the same superior performance as a great quality dual suspension 26er, and at a reduced cost.
