By Victor Hood

We all want the very best ride we can get whether it's on skis or a snowboard. You might be shocked at the difference waxing and tuning your skis can have on your day. It's even more noticeable in less than ideal situations like when it's icy. A lot depends on where you live and tend to spend your time skiing or board riding. It's super easy to get complacent and comfortable when we frequent the same places all the time. If you're interested in learning more, keep reading for tips on waxing and tuning your skis.

There are various reasons you should keep a good edge and wax job on your skis. This important for safety as well as performance because things like dull edges can cause you to fall. Dull ski edges won't be able to grip properly when skiing on ice. You can spend a lot of time falling and getting back up if your skis don't grip. When talking wax, it's not just about having a good wax job but it's also important to have the right wax for your conditions. You also need to consider the outside temperatures. Using the wrong wax for the outside temperature can cause you to slow down. So when planning ahead, be sure to consider all of these factors.

Believe it or not, but you can help yourself a lot just by doing the minimum amount of ski base and edge maintenance. We always recommend doing as much as possible, but we also know that not everyone will do that. So, if you're a bit of a minimalist with things, then at least do the minimum amount of basic care for your skis or snowboard. So always dry your gear after a day on the mountains. To maintain a sharp edge on your skis, hit the edges with a diamond stone. You will learn to tell when the edge is sharp with a little practice.

When you wax your skis, it's much better and safer to go with a wax for slightly colder temperatures. The reason for this is simple. Your skis will be a bit on the sticky side if you use a higher temperature condition wax in the wrong conditions. This will lead to you not gliding as fast or as well as you might have otherwise done. You don't want to have to skate; you want to ski. When applying the wax to your skis, you want to use the same principles as ironing. Avoid lingering for too long on any one spot, much like you would do with ironing clothes. When doing a hot wax job, you don't want to produce smoke. After finishing with one ski, let it cool for about half an hour before working with it.

There are many more tips and tricks available for waxing and tuning your skis and snowboards. Or you can avoid it altogether and take your equipment to a local ski shop to have it done.
