Going Fishing? Check Out These Helpful Tips!

By Shawn I. Liu

Fishing is valuable to people on many different levels. Some people find that fishing requires expertise and commitment. Others place more emphasis on the relaxation aspect of a fishing trip. There are even some people who look at it as a food source. Regardless of what fishing means to you, you can do it, and here's information on how to start.

If you are going to fish in a new location, stop by a local bait and tackle shop and talk with the fishermen there for their local wisdom. Buy some flies that match the area, and just be friendly to everyone you meet. The locals open up to people that seem interested in their area. You are likely to get some good advice from them, and they may even invite you to join them in their fishing expedition.

No matter what the weather is, always carry a good sunscreen along on your fishing trips. Even if there is a light cloud cover, the rays of the sun can still cause you to become sunburned.

When you have a fish on your line, observe its movements to determine what action you should take. Its jumping will diminish before it rolls to its side. This is a tell-tale sign that it is time to begin reeling the fish in. It means it is exhausted. Wait until you observe the fish rolling over on its side, and then begin to bring it in.

Be aware that some fish have sharp backward facing teeth. These two fish have really sharp teeth, and they will attempt to bite you. Grab these fish by their bellies and remove your hook after you know the fish is certainly dead. Wearing gloves will make it easier to dislodge the hook and return the fish to the water.

To make your fishing excursion more efficient, invest in a fish finder technology. These devices are sort of like a "GPS for fishing." It provides directions that help you locate any nearby fish.

Try changing up the color of your bait when you find you are not seeing much success while fishing. Some fish are drawn to dull colors, while others are drawn to bright colors. Therefore, when you pack your tackle box, make sure you include a plethora of bait colors.

Smallmouth bass and walleye tend to be picky regarding the live bait that you use. Increase your chances of catching a lot of fish by bringing a few dozen leeches as backup bait. Leeches can be kept alive overnight by putting them into a plastic or Styrofoam container that is ventilated and has water in the bottom.

Bass fishermen usually prefer grubs that are light-colored rather than dark-colored. Gray, chartreuse, white or yellow grubs are especially effective. Translucent grubs often work well. These grubs contain metal-colored pieces that attract fish by reflecting light. Try using a grub that is the color of the water to increase your odds of success.

If you do not have an aerator, change your bait well's water frequently. To do otherwise risks killing your bait, making them useless for fishing. Even if you use an aerator, it's a smart move to change your bait water at least twice a day.

Even if it's not a hot day, you should always bring sunscreen on your fishing trips. Even if there is a light cloud cover, the rays of the sun can still cause you to become sunburned.

You should almost always use a sinker whenever you are fishing in the winter. Sinkers add weight to the line which allow your bait to reach lower depths where fish dwell this time of year. You can use as few or as many sinkers on your line as needed to reach the appropriate depth for your water.

When you're attaching a hook or a lure to your line, it's best to use an improved clinch knot. All you have to do is slip your line through the eye of the hook and turn the hook five times and then run the end of the line through your fist loop. Pull the end of the line as tightly as possible to finish.

Patience is an essential ingredient in the sport of fishing. If you don't have any patience then fishing may not be the sport for you. If you're intent on fishing anyway, you'll need to get yourself used to the patience required by taking shorter trips at first.

If you fish at night it's a good idea to use lighted bobbers. With a lighted bobber, it is easier to see when a fish bites thanks to the the small on-board light bulb. When the bait is touched by a fish, you will see the bobber moving up and down.

Take some of the most precious information that you have gleaned here and don't hesitate to share it with those you know. They will be impressed by the things that you know and they will appreciate how you want them to be good at fishing, as well. This will help you bond with others in your social circle and create shared memories that will last a lifetime.
