Mountain Biking Classifications

By Jane Claire

As a sport or a hobby, mountain biking can be split into 9 different categories. These categories are very versed in what they offer. They are:

1. The BMX style - In BMX, the bikes have wheels that measure only 20 inches. Theses bikes can mostly be found in dirt jumps or skate parks. Since they have smaller tires and shorter bases, you can easily perform stunts and tricks with these equipments.

2. The Cross country category - In this category, you just need to ride towards hills and back again. It doesn't require the biker to do those dangerous stunts. Nevertheless, many cross country riders have the stamina to participate in long marathons.

3. The Cyclo cross style - This style is a combination of mountain and road biking. This course includes cross through rivers and obstacles.

4. The Dirt jumping style - This style means that you need to jump over a huge pile of man made dirt with your bike and do tricks with it when you're up in the air. The course involves 6 or more piles so you can gain a momentum to make higher jumps.

5. Downhill - Downhill mountain biking involves racing downhill as fast as possible. This type of riding is very intense and extreme, offering riders the chance for ultimate thrills and excitement.

6. Freeride - Free riding involves finding the perfect line down the mountain using all of the terrain to express yourself. These competitions are very popular, as riders can express themselves any way they see fit.

7. The Single speed style - This style doesn't need bikes that have a lot of gears that will cause you a tremendous headache. It involves a one geared bike and lesser components. A lighter bike like this would allow you to pedal more and encounter fewer problems. It's all about simplicity.

8. Street and urban - This type of riding involves riding in urban areas, ledges, and other types of man made obstacles. Riders of street and urban biking will do tricks as well, such as stalls and grinds.

9. The Trails category - 26 or 20 inch wheeled bikes are the ones that are used in this category. This course involves obstacles so you really have to concentrate on what you are doing and maintain your balance. It's a tough course.
