By Sanaa N. Pun

BMX competition bikes are becoming a popular item on many peoples wish lists with the growing popularity of the sport. Bicycle competitions of this nature first became popular around the early 1970's and had continued to grow with the sport now in many countries. With the growing number of choices available, color, design, and material may all play a role in selection.

Originally, a stingray type bicycle was used in racing due to the smaller frame. With the growing popularity, there are now different manufacturers. All of these manufacturers offer a large selection in color and graphics to suit most any preference. Several competition winners have also produced different versions of the bicycle they use for the general public.

Common materials found in the construction of the frame are aluminum or titanium with chromoly added, carbon forks, high tensile steel. With this manufacturers can produce a cycle that is extremely light weight and provides rapid acceleration. With different wheel sizes, most come with 36 spokes but some of the smaller wheels may have less. Different materials provide different options with many specially designed for particular races.

Along side the different material choices, a person can chose different races or competitions to enter. These are freestyle or street, dirt, race, or flatland. The different races call for different specifications that call for slight modifications to the original bike. These may include, double or triple walled wheels for dirt races or detanglers for street.

For races and competitions, it may be necessary to remove or change some of the parts on the item. These are mainly safety issues, like removing the kickstand and reflectors. But if changing from one race style to the other, changing parts like the tires or gears may be necessary. It is always a good idea to wear a helmet no matter what the style of race one chooses to enter.

Many of the manufacturers offer a large variety in parts if one chooses to change or add parts for particular races. Many of the parts a person can change are the wheels, handle grips, tires, gears, and many more. These parts are specially designed for particular purposes or terrains so it is good to read all the information before changing them out.

BMX competition bikes are an ever growing sport for many people of all ages. With races in all classes and ages, many areas have installed bicycle parks to accommodate and offer a safe place to practice. With all the benefits, this sport has become a clean hobby for the whole family. All members of a family can participate either as part of the pit crew, volunteer, or a racer.
