Gauge verses Caliber

By Heather Mitchel

A writer would have to understand the type of arms that a character is carrying. Here is some important information about the meaning of the different terms. Caliber (caliber) typically refers to a mathematical term, excluding the decimal point, in the appellation of a cartridge in order to determine the breadth of the bullet. Furthermore, it also acts as a measurement of the diameter of the gun's barrel. Most definitions in most glossaries say:

You can measure a gun barrel's internal diameter using metric or decimal measuring systems. When taking a measurement of a rifled arm, a person may choose to either measure land to land or groove to groove. For this reason, different units are used to express the caliber of handguns. Choosing gauge or caliber can be confusing. The diameter of the bore is not known by its caliber.

A .44 Magnum is not .44 inches. It has a diameter of 0.429 inches. Just to confuse you, a .38 Special does not have a diameter of 38/100 inches. A .357 caliber means that the bullet diameter measures .357 inches. True to its name, the .357 Magnum has a diameter of .357 inches. The length of a 9mm is .355 inches. Calibers can be very confusing at times. The definition of a .45 Colt is that it is a revolver cartridge. The .45 ACP is a round that goes into a semi-auto weapon. They cannot be altered.

The word "caliber" may mean something completely different when it used to describe barrel lengths in larger artillery pieces. The translation of an artillery piece's description labeled as 5 in/50 calibers would be that the barrel is fifty times larger than the diameter of the bore, or just 250 inches long. Gauge relates to shotguns and is the bore dimension of a shotgun set by the quantity of round lead balls of bore diameter that is identical to a pound. As a case in point, twelve lead balls that suit the diameter of a 12 gauge shotgun is the same as one pound Shotguns come with many different gauges. In this system when the gauge increases the bore diameter decreases.

That's completely different from caliber. Your primary duty as a writer is to get it right. If you are mistaken about something someone may be able to point it out to you but if not, it is always important to make certain that you got things right the first time.
