Getting The Most Out Of Mustad Fish Hooks

By Melody Lyons

Serious fishermen know the tackle and bait they choose has a lot to do with success. Most fishermen don't put enough thought into fishhook choice however. The multitude of style available can be overwhelming. Mustad fish hooks have a complete line, so knowing the components and terms can help make the choice easier.

A fishhook is pretty simple. There's the eye where the line attaches, followed by the shank. The bottom curve is called the bend and ends with a barb and point. The distance from the point tip to the shank is important to consider and known as the gape. The bite (or throat) refers to the depth from point to the bottom of the bend.

Size of hook is an important consideration and often made improperly. Experienced anglers choose size based on the bait used, not on species size. The sizing system can be confusing though. The smallest size is 32 and as the number gets smaller the size increases. At 1 the system changes to the aught-size and the larger the number, the bigger the size (1/0 through 19/0).

There are many different types on the market, with variations based on the type of species and type of bait one is using. At its most basic there are single, double and treble shapes available. This designation refers to the number of points and each type has its specific use. Treble hooks are often used on lures or when using soft baits like cheese.

Barb-type is another aspect to think about. The barb keeps the hook secured when reeling in. In addition to the standard needle point, there are other variations based on need. For hard-mouthed types like tuna and tarpon the knife-edge barb is often used. Barbless are used in catch-and-release situations.

Take some time to choose the right fishhook. The right mustad fish hooks are available for any bait, species and situation one may find. The right choice can increase one's success rate significantly.
