Missouri Waterfowl Hunting Reservations, Seasons And Permits

By Betsy Davenport

Missouri waterfowl hunting kicks off when the geese and ducks begin to migrate during fall. There are three separate zones in the middle and the northern and southern parts of the state. The season starts in staggered fashion, with the north going first and followed soon after by the middle and south.

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service decides whether the season is going to be liberal, moderate or restrictive. That equates to 60, 45 or 30 days respectively. Based on the season length, the exact dates and duration for each zone are determined and made public in late July.

A permit or license is necessary for all hunters (resident or otherwise) aged 16 and above. The permits go on sale each year on July 1. Residents pay $10 for an annual permit while those from out-of-state are charged $80. Non-residents can get daily permits for $11 per day.

The permits can be bought in person from authorized vendors, or online or by telephone using credit cards. Apart from this, a migratory bird hunting permit also has to be bought for $6 from the same vendor. Federal requirements include a duck stamp, which can be purchased for $15 from vendors or from any U. S. Post office.

The permits and duck stamp won't be needed when the light goose conservation order is active from February 1 to April 30. Hunters simply need a conservation permit instead, which can be obtained by residents for $5 and by non-residents for $40. Shooting time extends from 1/2 hour before sunrise to sunset, or from sunrise to sunset in teal season.

The Department of Conservation (MDC) offers missouri waterfowl hunting
reservations for the 15 areas it manages. Twelve of these areas allocate half of the reservations through a random draw. The other half is set aside for poor-line or walk-in hunters who sign on to a waiting list after arriving. The MDC is testing a pilot 'Quick Draw' system to allocate 80% of the reservations, leaving the balance of 20% for poor-line hunters.
