Five of the Best Cycling Routes in the UK

By Sally O Jenson

You don't have to go far to find great places to cycle in the UK, but if you are looking for something a little special there are plenty of routes that are worth a bit of a journey too. Somewhere that's nicely away from the hustle and bustle is The Isle of Man. Here you get to enjoy some of the quietest roads in the UK, as long as you don't go during the motorbike tours. Ramsey Harbour is the starting point of some top trails which take you along sea views and through scenic hamlets.

The scenery of the Peak District can really take your breath away. This whole region is a bit of a hub for people that enjoy extreme sports, including rock climbing and trail running. Somewhere that's been perfectly maintained for cyclists is the Tissington Trail between Parsley Hey and Parwich. It gives you a route that's set between Manchester and Sheffield that's rich in rocky vistas, but doesn't leave you too tired.

The Clyde and Loch Lomond cycling route gives you the heart of Scotland in a nut shell. There are amazing stretches of pine forest along the trail from Glasgow to the Loch itself. And that's not all to keep you occupied. You'll also come across Dumbarton Castle, Erskine Bridge, and some historic docks too. That makes it a good balance of a long distance journey with plenty of interesting stop opportunities.

Lincolnshire offers up a real gem with the Water Rail Way trial. This only opened recently, but it's already attracting quite a following. The route takes you all the way from Lincoln to the Wash, and passes through some incredible open Fenland along the way. If the sound of all that easy-going cycling isn't enough, there are also some top artworks set up for you to take in on the journey.

Ennerdale Water in Cumbria is a great route for anyone that wants some off-road biking that offers a challenge while still being thoroughly enjoyable. It's a fairly gentle trail that takes you in a circular route starting and finishing from Ennerdale itself, and skirting out to Black Sail Hut.
