How To Make And Test Your Own Shooting Sandbags With Minimum Fuss

By Cheri Knowles

When you need to try out a new scope or just need a stable platform for your rifle, you must go in for shooting sandbags. It is unnecessary to and buy an expensive item from the market. You can make a nice and solid rest right where you are, at home.

To begin with, get a tube sock or a trouser leg. Denims are a smart choice for this enterprise as the material is both reasonably soft and very, very durable. Just sow up one extremity of the sock or the leg so as to close it firmly. Fill half of the bag that has been created with sand.

Any sort of sand will perform until as it is dry and does not form lumps. Then tie the remaining portion of the leg or the sock, so that is now shut at both ends.

Take the bag and place it under the forward muzzle of the rifle. Squeeze the bag until the muzzle is raised and you have your round on the target. Your bag is now ready to be tested.

You have to test if the bag cradles the butt of the rifle in a soft cushion and whether it allows you to make small but significant adjustments. Place your bag on the shooting bench such that the cradle is at the rear along with the butt. Push the butt into the bag and move it around subtly to the right or the left so that you get an idea whether the recoil is shifting the sand around.

You then push the rifle back and take a couple of test shots. Make your shooting sandbags lighter in case the recoil is excessive and heavier if not. On the other hand, press the butt down heavy into the bag and then shoot. Whether the barrel remains at the desired angle you are through.
