AK-47 Tactical Accessories For The Worlds Favorite Killing Machine

By Casandra Newton

Known fondly as 'the people's gun', the Russian-built AK-47 is an antique compared to the carbon and plastic assault rifles deployed in the British and American armies today. It lacks accuracy and sophistication. Its simplicity may be what drives its popularity. Easy and cheap to manufacture, it as only eight moving parts. It is so easy to use that a child can put down 650 rounds per minute with only basic instruction. It should come as no surprise that AK-47 tactical accessories are readily available on an internationally popular shopping website that is itself a household name.

The AK-47 was built by the Russians during World War II. Today, there are anywhere between 50 million and 70 million Kalashnikov rifles distributed all over the world. It is the most widespread military weapon in the world.

That wasn't a joke about parts being readily available. A search of my favorite website (free delivery) for 'AK-47 Tactical Accessories' produced 1,908 results. Listed alongside handguards, buffer tubes and buttstocks were an AK47 water pistol and a toy pump action soft bullet fire model. The full-fledged, grown-up version of the world's favorite killing machine does not yet appear to be quite so readily available.

Taking the weapon apart to clean it is also an easy task. It can be stripped in under a minute and quickly cleaned whatever the ambient climate. It is not even a problem if there is no time to clean it, it will fire on the battlefield anyway. The same may not be said of its more sophisticated modern descendants.

Reducing the online search to simply, 'AK-47' produces pages and pages of books, gadgets and toys, including a three-dimensional ice tray where the cubes come out shaped like bullets. The tray itself is actually shaped like the signature curved ammunition magazine. The operating instructions for a more recent Kalashnikov rifle are out in paperback. It is hardly any wonder that the iconic rifle is as much a household name as a popular cola soft drink.

The name itself trips innocently off the tongue. How much easier is it to say 'AK-47' than 'Scharfschutzengewehr 69'. The 'A' stands for 'automatic', (avtomat in Russian), while the 'K' is the first letter of the inventor's surname, General Mikhail Kalashnikov. In Russian slang, the gun is known as the 'Kalash'.

Another interesting fact is that there are more international laws governing the trade in bananas than there are in commerce in international weapons. There are no fewer than three binding agreements and one non-binding agreement, the International Plant Protection Convention, governing bananas. There is not even one all-encompassing, legally-binding agreement for the arms trade.

The AK-47 isn't going anywhere soon. It's cheap, it's tough and it's easy to procure. It has featured in battles from WWII to Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down incident in 1993). It saw the collapse of its birthplace, the former Soviet Union. The Americans used it as recently as conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Klashnikov, a new brand of vodka, has recently been launched in the United Kingdom.
