All About Wilderness Survival Training

By Ladonna Franklin

There are many programs and packages available for those interested in wilderness survival training. There is nothing like getting away from urban living and getting back to nature for awhile. These programs offer challenges and adventure along with teaching useful skills for living outdoors. Costs are quite reasonable, considering that all the materials and manuals are included in the cost.

There are many people who would like to relive the days of the early American indigenous people. In the early days of America, people were in touch with nature and its cycles and rhythms. Along with this, came a respect for the environment and natural resources which. Sad to say, many of these qualities and skills have been lost in our fast-paced urban and tech-savvy society.

Not only do they offer an adventurous challenge but these programs also teach about conserving natural resources and reconnecting with nature and its cycles. There are also skilled instructors on hand who can teach basic outdoor skills. Most people are interested to learn such basic skills as how to build a shelter from different materials available, how to start a fire with flint and sticks, and finding plants and animals that are safe to eat as well as drinking water.

There are a number of different programs available. One is called the ultra-light field course because participants only carry a blanket, a knife and a poncho. No tents, backpacks or stoves are allowed and, of course, no watches or cell phones. The object is to live like the indigenous Native Americans and learn to walk in their ways and learn their skills. There are different time formats available ranging from one week to two weeks or even a month.

Those at the entry level often like to start with the one-day programs that are available for wilderness areas in Colorado or Utah. One of the more adventurous is the Lost Coast trip that treks through the forty miles of California coast that is unreachable by road vehicles. Beginners usually start with the one-day trips, learn the basics needed, and then go on to more challenging programs.

What to bring along will depend on whether you are planning on going for one day or more. Expect to bring along your own lunch and snacks as well as backpack for the one day trip. The four day package requires a sleeping bag and other backpacking equipment such as a tent, and water bottle, backpack, etc.

In addition to the clinics and programs there are full fledged schools that have been in operation for a long time. These also have basic outdoor skills programs that specialize in hands-on learning in the wild along with professional trainers. They also help students learn how to relate to nature and respect its cycles and harmony.

For those who are looking for outdoor adventure and useful skills, wilderness survival training is a perfect challenge. Both young and old can benefit from learning outdoor endurance skills which are always good to know in case of emergencies or natural disasters. This type of program is also a perfect platform for building character and developing leadership abilities as well as connecting with nature.
