Custom Fishing Lures An Introduction To Various Types Of Bait

By Allan Hatchell

Commercial fish baits are based on custom fishing lures and by definition is an object attached to the end of the line. It will mimic the prey of the fish to attract it. The modern type was done commercially in the 1900s in Michigan. A line is not complete without the bait at the end.

When used for fish casting with a fly pole, it is continuously unreeled and pulled in making the bait swim or create an attractive sound to fish. Hooks are also used in deep sea fishing equipment and is called jigs. These types can be used up to 300 meters in depth and are designed with a weighted hook in the end with a lead head.

For tuna rigs, a daisy chain or what the Japanese call long line consists of multiple ones rigged with hooks. The advantage of using the lures is a reduction of the use of food bait. For catch and release angling, it provides for a better mortality rate for the released fish.

You can get confused with the different type of bait a sports fisherman makes use of. Stick baits are one of them which are of the surface type of hook. It floats and resembles prey that the fish are attracted to. When pulled in and let go, it makes a popping sound. Artificial flies are another variety designed to resemble all degree of fish prey and used basically with the fly rod.

The other type is the crank bait known as plugs. It has a fishlike body shape and has dissimilar movements. Spinner baits are spinner mechanisms with wire bent at a 60 degree angle with a flashy spinner and a hook at the lower end. Another well known is the soft plastic type that can resemble fish prey like worms, lizard, and others.

You will never hear the end of it which bait is better. The market has mass produced bait that you can even put your corporate logo into the body and use it as corporate give-away. There are the custom made, handmade designs that you can have done to your hearts delight. You can always experiment which best fits your style.

Anglers will increase in numbers as more people are getting into it. There are no age limits to the sport and no taxing physical conditioning that goes with it. You could go with commercial baits but eventually you will tend to go to the custom fishing lures as you get better with the sport.
