Sport Fishing: The Carp Family

By Ronald Jassephilld

The common carp is the most popular type of carp in the world. The koi is the name given to the more ornamental variety of the common carp. Carps have been raised for many reasons mainly as pets or as a source of food. Here are a few of the members of the carp species and how they are caught:

* The Most Popular Carp

As adults, this variety can become as long as 1.2 meters if there is an abundant source of aquatic plants. They originated from the freshwaters of Asia and Eastern Europe but were transported all over the world in the past for various reasons.

The conventional way of catching this variety is through the use of rods and fishing reels but it can be tough because they are known to be fighters. There are many known carp baits but the most popular, especially in the UK, is called boilies. Many Americans and Canadians catch carps through fly fishing and spear and bow fishing.

* Carps with Filter Feeding Habits

A pair of well known carps that are filter feeders are the silver carp and the bighead carp. Fishing Tackle with regular lines and hooks are useless when dealing with these types of carps. A special method called the "suspension method" is used to catch these varieties of carp. You need special items in your fishing tackle box for this method; namely, a special type of tiny hooks, a big bobber and dough balls.

* The Crucian carp and the grass carp

The crucian carp are smaller variety of the species but they are still popular as a sport fish. They can be caught with a rod and reel.

Another fighter in the carp species is the grass carp. Due to their diet that is mostly composed of aquatic vegetation; they are less likely to bite on regular bait. In places where bow fishing is legal, grass carps are popular catch.

Having read the different types of carps, gather up your fishing gear and head down to your local river to see if you got what it takes to hook a giant carp.
