Cycling In Michigan Is Good Outdoor Fun

By Allan Hatchell

Riding a bicycle has more benefits than simply not having to suffer through peak-hour pileups. It is great exercise, and promotes overall health and fitness. Cycling in Michigan has become increasingly popular, and there are hundreds of miles of bike paths to choose from. The beautiful scenery offers the lushness of the forests, the calm of numerous lakes and streams, and the natural beauty of gently sloping hills.

Michigan cycling events range from family rides by the lakeside to competitive adventure races. The weather is generally a bit on the cold side, so most events take place during the summer and autumn. In terms of accommodation, cyclists can choose to camp out near the trails or spend the night in lodges and inns.

The LMB (League of Michigan Bicyclists) and the TCBA (Tri-County Bicycle Association) are among the main event organizers. The LMB tends to host events that go on for more than a day. For example, the Pedal and Paddle Tour lasts for two days, starting on the Saturday. The bike ride takes place along the popular Hart-Montague trail. Riders can set their own goals, aiming to cover between ten and fifty miles. This adventurous event also includes a canoe ride along the White River in Manistee National Forest.

The LMB also organizes longer tours each year. These events give riders a chance to explore the wonders of the great outdoors and form bonds with new people. A good example is the Sunrise Tour, which lasts for three days.

The TCBA is the largest biking club in the state. It hosts tours that cater to riders of varying skill levels. The association's most popular activity is held each year over Labor Labor Day weekend, and lasts for four to five days. Participants have a great time riding along different routes from Lansing to Mackinaw City, or even further. The proceeds from this event go towards funding other statewide cycling projects.

Different organizations offer cycling scholarships to deserving athletes. The prestigious Iceman Scholarship is given to student cyclists from across the state when they perform well in the Iceman Cometh Challenge. These top ranking students also need to demonstrate a love for the sport, and possess strong characters.

Cycling in Michigan is a diverse and useful activity that the entire family can enjoy. It offers something for everyone, whether they want to ride for fun, for competitive purposes, or for exercise. There are also charity tours held each year, so worthy causes can get much-needed financial support.
