Items To Consider During Snowboard Sizing

By Brian Cruse

Snowboard sizing comes after narrowing down the options that meet the needs of a specific rider. When deciding which is the right size to choose there are a number of things that have got to be considered. These are things such as weight, body type and boot size. Additionally you will also have to consider the riding style as well as the riders level of experience.

Use the weight factor to further narrow down the list. You will find out that a lot of manufacturers provide buyers with a size chart that is specific to their snowboards. Some even take it further providing you with a size chart for every board they produce. Charts give you a good starting point to narrow down the board size though any weight fits 2 to 3 different sizes. Also if your weight does not appear on the list it does not mean the board will not meet your needs.

The other factor to consider is the body type. It is a common mistake for many to mainly focus on their height when it comes to selecting boards. Its a mistake because the snowboard gets no input from the riders height rather the weight presses the board into the snow. In reference to the board size, the body type determines the riders height.

Small sized boards are ideal for short and stocky riders whereas those who are tall and skinny are better suited for longer snowboards. When it comes to boot size a comparison should be made to the snowboards width. The print of the boot is more valid than that of the actual foot since there are boots with smaller prints than others.

Those with boot size beyond 11 will find the boot print matters even more. You should try to avoid heal and toe drag as much as you can. Relative to the size of a boot is the boards performance and waist width.

The board size can also be determined through the experience of a rider. Those with less experience doing everyday resort cruising should e more inclined towards the shorter sizes which allow the rider to maneuver and turn easily. Powder riding requires longer boards that allow for good float for slower speeds. Those with great experience are able to handle long boards in almost all situations.

Short sized boards are easy to maneuver and spin which makes them popular among freestyle riders. Those that enjoy free riding an entire mountain will most probably be on snowboards that will in the long run become their ideal board length. Longer boards are popularly preferred by the back country and high speed free riders. Additionally, board type and riding conditions should be considered during snowboard sizing.
