Key West Tarpon Fishing Methods

By Natasha Moore

Saltwater anglers and fish buyers greatly benefit from Key West tarpon fishing. This fish is brown or silver in color and has huge scales and body. It has lungs that facilitate easy broaching and inhalation of oxygen from surface water. It is structured with heavy bone pointing up and a large mouth. Key West, which is in south of Florida Keys harvests the most tarpons and many people enjoy going to see the harbor.

The main sources of food for this fish are crabs, smaller bait fish and shrimps. They migrate in June and May where big numbers of tarpon go to Oceanside flats located in Florida Keys Island. This time fly anglers take the opportunity to catch this awesome silver fish in Florida. They use different methods to fish depending on preference. An example is the light tackle, which uses crabs and other foods to draw them to the water surface and catch them.

Night fishing is the other method done in the evening, almost sunset. Here, one uses spin casting attires at dusk and rolls a plug near deep channel. This method is good when all conditions are accurate. Additionally, one can get more of them using this method since it is done at night. This is when they are active due to low light intensity as they are nocturnal.

Hook should be set hard since this fish has a mouth that has similar consistency and texture as a cinder block. The other method is the use of a fly rod, which is mostly done early in the morning where one feeds them a fly. Use of fly rod to fish is the easiest method. Fly rods are sold in different colors and patterns and one should make a wise choice that can ease the activity.

In the morning, the fish travels in deep waters and it is hard to hook them on the fly. The fish do not go far to look for food, therefore, one should choose a color that will be seen by the fish. This method is popular and preferred by most fish anglers. There are no specific times to fish since they are found all the year in waters except during migration times. One can fish them at any time especially on the boat side.

The preferable time to fish during the day are afternoons and mornings. This is when there is change in tides as a result of the moon. Since this fish is a tidal feeder, it feeds during these times of the day and this is when one can harvest them with ease. They are mostly in motion while looking for food and one can trap them easily.

Loads of tarpon migrate during certain time of the year and this determines the best months that one can do successful fishing. The annual migration of this fish starts in March and takes up to July. Therefore, April, May and June are the best months for harvesting large number of tarpon. However, one may not get large catches because many anglers do the fishing at this time.

In brief, Key West tarpon fishing is a great opportunity for anglers. When it comes to angling activity, tarpon is the best fish and Key West being the best place. The fish is big and amazing to feed a whole family. Full day chartered fishers can possibly get enough catch for both sale and dinner.
