Many factors about the military are strategically shrouded in secret. This is perhaps one of the ways in which they operate and this covers even the area of innovations. Therefore at the unveiling and testing of their new weaponry the armed forces will carefully choose the facts that must be released to the public with the rest remaining a closely guarded secret. Such is the case with innovations like the thermal target systems that have been in use by the military over a time now.

Such equipment is used to provide imaging position measurement as well as range location. Within such a unit is also communication devices needed to transmit crucial signals and data needed by the equipment for homing in purpose. This can include using laser beam and the global positioning system (GPS) for guidance.

The armed forces action has since turned high-tech. One benefit with such an approach is the reduced soldier casualty. In fact most of the wars being fought today are won on the technological ground which eventually pays with a complete overrun of the enemy. This of course depends on how the victor has used the technology in their hands to beat the enemy.

Apart from reducing civilian casualty it is also important to accurately use the ammo to take out the enemy. Technologically advanced equipment is also used to meet this objective and reduce ammo wastage. Therefore the equipment in use is generally high tech and can adapt to various situations as the need arises.

Included within such equipment units are imagers that work in conjunction with real time platforms. From such platforms the equipment can be controlled to operate appropriately. In addition there are multifunction heat imagers that are used to enhance day or night homing in operations. Such units can be fitted on to hand held or mounted weaponry to provide the desired visual advantage for the soldiers. In this way the equipment can be used with more precision even under the cover of darkness.

There is capability to integrate such equipment units to a central command. In such a configuration automation can be accomplished based on preprogrammed processing. Therefore high precision ammunition delivery is possible with such enhanced homing in capabilities. This means fewer soldiers on such missions and less wastage of ammo.

Global positioning system that uses the geostationary satellite can also be integrated here to further enhance the homing in process. The signals and data from the GPS are utilized to specify long range position prior to heat imaging and delivering the ammunition with precision. This setup can be applied to the hand held light weight weapons as well as the heavy duty vehicle mounted weapons.

The design for such equipment is sophisticated and they are costly to manufacture. Basically such units will have self positioning capabilities with enhanced imaging in order to provide adequate homing in. As an addition the GPS is also used to provide long range information to such units and enable accuracy even over long distances. Therefore thermal target systems have been used over time now especially in military field to enhance precision and as much as possible reduce battle field casualties.
