The Advantages Of Having The Correct MMA Sparring Gloves

By John MacKintosh

If you have heard of MMA then you will be aware that it stands for Mixed Martial Arts. For those who have never heard of it, it is a full contact, no holds barred sport, that combines techniques from both the martial arts and wrestling. This sport has grown immensely over the years, with many international competitions being held. As with most sports, there is certain equipment needed, such as MMA sparring gloves in order to protect yourself during practice sessions.

It was the first Ultimate Fighting Contest, in 1993, which first brought Mixed Martial Arts competitions to the States. That initial tournament was won by a Jiu Jitsu fighter named Royce Gracie. Consequently there was an upsurge in the amount of interest shown in the martial arts.

Initially it was just professional fighters who were involved with MMA, but due to growing popularity it has become more widely taught. It has become more accessible to the public at large, whatever their ages. People state that this form of training is safe for everyone.

While you are in training you will get involved with sparring, and for that you are going to need some gloves. These come in a wide variety of weights and styles, but are there to protect both you and your partner. As you are going to be doing a lot of sparring in your training it is important to get the right fit for you.

When you are trying to decide which gloves are going to be right for you, notice what your training buddies are wearing. You have nothing to lose by asking their advice, find out why they use that glove and not another style or brand. Find out how long they have been using that particular pair for, this will give you a good idea about how durable they are.

They should fit snugly in all of the right places, have plenty of padding in the knuckle area, but most importantly they should feel secure. A pair that are going to slip and slide as your hands begin to sweat are not going to be much use to you. For many mail order is the way to go, which is all well and good if you know the brand and product.

Initially the MMA sparring gloves will feel very stiff, and they are going to need breaking in. This will be especially noticeable in the finger and thumb loop areas. Unfortunately there is no short cut to breaking in these gloves, but remember that the ones you tried on at the club were also new and stiff once.
