An Introduction To Grizzly Hunts In Alaska

By Noemi Wallner

One of the best big-game hunting experiences you can have is going on grizzly hunts in Alaska. This wilderness state does not have many people living in it. However, you will find big game in abundance, especially elk, caribou, moose, and two species of bear.

Bears are great prey if you want to hunt for a trophy. In the most northern of the US states, you can find two species. The smaller and more common one is the black bear, of which there are more or less 100,000 roaming The Last Frontier. The more prized species for trophy hunters, however, is the grizzly or brown bear.

There are about 30,000 brown bears left in the Alaskan wilderness. These animals are huge. Males weigh an average of 500 to 900 pounds when mature. The females are smaller, about half or three quarters the size of the males. What makes these animals such a thrill to hunt is that in spite of their size and their bulky looks, they are incredibly fast. When threatened, they also tend to stand their ground.

You need a permit to hunt these beautiful animals. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game issues these permits to residents of the state and also has very strict regulations for hunters. This is to protect the species, which is threatened in most parts of the United States.

Non-resident Americans need either a guide or a close family member who lives in the state to accompany them on a hunt. Non-Americans must hire a licensed Alaska hunting guide to go with them. These guides are also compulsory for Alaska caribou hunting, among others.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has many other regulations and laws for hunters too. For instance, you're not allowed to kill a female brown bear if she has cubs and you may not kill cubs either, since the bears reproduce very slowly. To find out more about these regulations, contact the Department or get the handbook that they publish annually in June. This handbook will also give you other useful information, for example safety tips.

To find the best places for grizzly hunts in Alaska, you can go almost anywhere in the state. Try to spend at least a week on the hunt, since you will be going into remote wilderness and crossing great distances. A transporter service will help you get to where you want to be and will also help you to get your kill back to civilization. When you budget for your trip, therefore, budget for an air taxi too.
