Big Game Fishing Tackle Will Help You Land The Big Ones

By Edwina Heuser

Big game fishing is a popular form of recreational fishing that targets large fish noted for their sporting qualities in terms of fighting spirit, strength and endurance. Their natural habitat is offshore in the open ocean. Popular targets include tuna and marlin. These species have individual specimens that weigh several hundred pounds. The sport requires special boating equipment and tackle that can withstand the extraordinary forces generated by these fish. Big game fishing tackle is purpose-designed for the sport.

The sport began during the early 1900s. It was popularized Charles Holder, a marine biologist from the USA. He wrote many scientific articles and books on the subject. Another important stimulus for the sport was the invention of motor boat. Anglers all around the world quickly learned that sport fish were formidable fighters capable of providing a long, tough and thrilling experience.

Over the decades, the sport has developed its own range of specially crafted equipment. Perhaps the most critical items are the rod, reel and line. Other important items include hooks, lures, clothing and landing nets. Rods are made from a range of materials including fiberglass to carbon fiber.

These days, the sport has its own range of equipment including hooks, line, braid, lures, landing nets and, of course, the all-important rod. Rod designs include carbon fiber rods and fully-rollered rods. Some have special graphite composite construction for superior strength; specially crafted guides and reel seats; and a slick, long butt grip to facilitate sliding the rod in and out of its holder when maneuvering the boat.

Big game fish can be attracted using either live bait or a lure. A full range of lures have been designed specially to attract large pelagics like marlin, shark or tuna. Trolling with a lure is a common strategy.

There are many tackle suppliers and even more product models. Shimano, Daiwa and Sambo are recognized around the globe as leading producers. Anglers have a wide range of choice.

Rods names often include a number that indicates the reel size or line class it can accommodate, with reels generally being able to hold 1,000 meters of their line class. For example, a Tiagra 12 rod made by Shimano can hold 1,000 meters of 12 pound (6 kilogram) line.

Open ocean angling for pelagic like tuna and marlin needs tough, durable equipment. Big game fishing tackle is made tough to catch tough fish. If you want to outsmart the big ones, get the right gear.
