A Cardboard City Bike: Where Do They Come Up With These?

By Rob Sutter

When concerning the materials utilized to make a city bike, aspects like metal for the body for itself in addition to seats composed to leather may spring to mind. Bicycles are made with this in mind and there's no real need to change up how things are done. Someone didn't feel that way, though, and the result was something that no one has seen before. What came about was a bicycle made not of metal but of cardboard.

Africa has certainly gained a bit of press due to the invention of a cardboard city bike occurring there. As told about on the Hurriyet Daily News website, this bicycle in particular has the potential to bring down rates of congestion in the worse off areas of the country. One can't deny that there are plenty of good intentions behind the invention of this particular bicycle, especially in the areas that have been deemed poor. Biking companies like Linus have given their thoughts on the matter and the environmental message behind it is something that has to be commended.

As one may be lead to believe, a bicycle compromised of cardboard had to go through quite a period of trial and error. Cardboard is not something that's standard in bicycle parts, let alone the entire build of one. However, innovation was put into play and the effort paid off. Izhar Gafn is the man responsible and he's quite an enthusiast in the way of amateur cycling, too. He finished the bicycle to where it could be used safely and now stands to be manufactured to the masses.

Gafn went through a great deal of trouble in order to perfect the bike. It took a year and a half for this particular ride to become absolutely perfect and much trial and error went into the testing process as well. Once those factors were accounted for and the cardboard was cemented into a form that could be utilized, a solution was then applied over the bike which consisted of minerals both waterproof and fireproof. It's clear that this bike is certified as one of the safest modes of travel for being so unorthodox.

"Ingenious" may not be an effective enough word to detail just how strong this idea could be. Cardboard is something that one might play with as a child as they imagine it as a dark cave, right? It seems like a wild idea that someone would actually utilize it a number of years later as entertainment but as a bike, it proved to be effective. Despite its abnormal nature, it's been certified as a safe way to get around, along with being effective to travel in and environmentally friendly to have around.
