City Bikers: What The Other People Think Of You

By Kyle Piraino

It's hard to understand the mind of a city biker. There are definitely some positives to having a bike, but there are also times that I can't figure out why they are riding their bike. Weather is a big player in whether or not you like, hate, or just downright pity someone who is riding their bike.

A situation where you are driving around in the city and you see someone on a commuter bike can have different emotions based on the situation. A sunny day for example, there is some sort of mixture of hatred and envy, especially if you are sitting in traffic. The want to not be in traffic and to be outside is so high at that point that you would do anything to get out of the car.

Of course, there are the situation where the weather does not feel like cooperating. Those are the times you are quite happy that your car has a roof and a heater. Seeing someone trying to bike through traffic in the pouring rain makes it impossible not to pity them a little. It is clearly their only way of transportation, and that meeting isn't going to run itself.

Pedestrians have a whole different point of view. They are the bane of your existence. The Linus Bike rider is someone that makes sure you know they are better than you. They will easily get to wherever they are going before you get your destination, no matter the weather. There is never a time where a pedestrian sees a biker and enjoys their company.

The bike is definitely a good investment for those who live in the city. But, I think the key is being able to choose between bike and car or bike and public transportation. Having the choice to ride your bike when it is nice out and taking the subway when the weather is bad is the solution to that problem. The issue is paying for both, but if you can it is definitely the move.
