The Best Concealed Carry Gun: Is Useless Without a Great Flashlight

By Dustin Aaron

Here are two products that you should always carry as a concealed handgun owner. First I'll say that you should carry a good flashlight. The flashlight should be at least 150 lumens and have a battery life of at least 4 hours at max power. I picked up some at Home Depot ($7.99 for package of two including 6 AAA batteries). This flashlight had a seven hour battery life and a crowned edge (sometimes called a strike bezel), which allows it to double as in close personal protection if needed. I bought one to carry on my person, one for the car, one for the closet, one for the girlfriend's go bag, and one to keep in case one of the others breaks. At $7.99 for 2 plus batteries, it was a great buy.

If you are one of those gadget freaks you can purchase the $155 500 Lumen Fury from Surefire Flashlights.

Let me tell you why you need to carry a flashlight with you at all times. It could turn into a real life-saver when you least expect it. My uncle was in an underground subway during a power outage. There were no lights and no backup power. He turned to his trusty old eight dollar flashlight and showed everyone else how to get out. Once they reached daylight, everyone was shocked to find that he wasn't a safety officer.

Simply shining a flashlight in a dark place can tell a potential attacker that you are not an easy target and it would be better to rob somebody else. I think of shining 200 focused lumens on a would be attacker and telling him that I'm not the victim that he was looking for. It sounds ridiculous, but if it means I don't get robbed, I'm in favor of it. Whenever I go out after dark, I carry a flashlight.

Several intelligent people carry pocket knives. I wear one clipped to my belt and it is very helpful. When I was a teen, my father gave me a limited run pocket knife. It has a three inch blade and is comfortable to carry every day. Last week I was shopping and saw a great pocket knife made by Winchester that was priced very reasonable. It had serrated edges so I purchased it.

Pocket knives come in handy all the time. Opening packages, cutting cordage, cutting zip ties, and the list goes on. My girlfriend thinks I'm crazy because I'm always dreaming up scenarios where my flashlight or pocket knife will come in handy. Do most of these scenarios ever happen? No. But I'm ready if they do.
