A Commuter Bike Used in a Video Game Job

By Rob Sutter

A commuter bike, for those that put it to use frequently, will see the benefits right away. Yes, it's not only a great way to travel about but it's also an excellent form of exercise for those who want to get into shape. It's no question that the perks, physical or otherwise, exist but I also believe that this type of bike can be seen in the world of gaming. Perhaps no other game in this regard is more well-known than the arcade hit, "Paperboy."

For those of you who love your old-school games, "Paperboy" should have a spot on your favorites list. The game that showcases the job of a paper delivery person on chaotic streets is one of those titles that everyone has heard about. Even when you consider just how crazy these streets are, some of the acts can be cemented in the realm of reality. For instance, a dog breaking away from its home to attack the bicycle-riding paperboy is somewhat imaginable. However, one's sense of reality will be tested when they see a phantom creep up on said paperboy on the same street, let alone the same game.

Within the game, commuter bikes are used on a perpetual basis in terms of doing a job as well as putting one's mindset to the absolute test. "Paperboy" is home to many different dangers and hazards, yes, but the newspapers must be delivered even still. In order to ensure the best possible score, you should make sure that the papers you toss land in front of the doors. Your score won't look much better if you wind up breaking a window or flipping a couple over while they're on a swing outside. For the greatest variety of these bikes, though, companies such as Linus should be looked at.

Be sure that you're giving papers to the right houses, too. The houses you must deliver to are indicated by white while those you should ignore are painted in red. This is simple enough but what's even simpler is how to keep them appeased: simply deliver papers during each round without causing damage. If you somehow break a window or even neglect to deliver said paper, not only do you run the risk of losing them on your route but they may become violent with traps set up to cost you an extra life.

I never would have thought that commuter biking would be utilized in such hectic situations in gaming. "Paperboy" stands as a classic but to say that it's a leisurely romp would be an outright lie. The mindsets of many gamers have been tested because of this game but the accomplished feeling after the fact is something that cannot be ignored. When a game like this rewards you for being so persistent, the feeling is undeniable.
