When removing components of a firearm, you are vulnerable to the risk of an accident occurring. You will need to know how to remove upper AK-47 handguards safely to avert such an accident. The tips that follow will be of some use in this respect.
For starters, before all else you must be cognizant of some elementary safety procedures. To stop the firearm inadvertently going off and causing you injury, keep it pointed away from you. You must obey this rule at all times for your own good.
Following on from this, unless you plan to use your gun, do not leave it loaded. A minimum of damage will be done if it does happen to go off. This means damage that could be inflicted on you, on other people and on other things such as property.
Also related is the need to make sure you keep your fingers away from the trigger unless (once again) you are planning to shoot something. These three rules do seem like basic common sense, but you would be surprised how many times they are broken. So while it may not help much writing them here, it certainly cannot do much harm either.
In following the points above, empty the gun ammo by taking the magazine out and making sure that the magazine chamber is empty. Ensure that the ammo is not left within the parameters of your work station. That is the first thing that you have to do.
The next phase is to strip the gun of its bolt carrier assembly, its carrier spring, and its dust cover. The buttstock screws can be taken out with a screwdriver, which can then be used as leverage to take out the buttstock. You can then install a replacement buttstock in the place of the old one just removed.
Now, since your firearm remains stripped, you may use your screwdriver on the pistol grip screw and remove the grip. Place the new grip in securely and use the screw to ensure it is in tight. You must ensure that the screw is tightened properly as a secure grip is essential.
Make a beginning on the lower handguard by turning the gun's gas tubing's retaining lever. Once this tubing has been removed, you can remove the forend cap of the gun by easily sliding it off. And it is just as easy to install a replacement, slide it on in the opposite manner you slid the old cap off.
At last, you can now make a start on the upper handguard, which will be straightforward now that you have turned the gas tubing's retaining level upwards. You can take the tubing out of the gun after it has been loosened. A forward optic mount equipped with gas tubing of its own can replace it, and the upper handguard can be reset.
In summary, being able to remove upper AK-47 handguards involves doing a fair amount to your firearm before you get to it. But this has to be done, and done carefully, if you are to do it right. The tips in the foregoing will hopefully have been of some use in this respect.
