The Fun In Turkey Hunts In Texas

By Rebecca Fox

Simply put, turkey hunting is for everyone! Traditionally hunting has been considered a male sport, but there are thousands of women who like to hunt and enjoy this sport. The whole family can enjoy the activity together in the spring or in the fall. Turkey Hunts in Texas can be a lot of fun for children when hunting is done safely under the constant supervision of an adult.

While turkey hunting is a favored sport of many a wildlife enthusiast, not all are aware that it is also one of the most dangerous hunts, because of the fear of being shot at by other hunters who might mistake you for a bird.

As wild birds gather in groups, they too are easy to find. One should not go too close to the bird roost. A hundred or two hundred yard distance must be kept from the roost so that there is enough room to get set and fire when the bird runs.

The next step in bird hunting is getting them out of their roost. The hunter must take part in a sequence of bird calls. But one must not confuse the call of another bird, such as an owl, with the bird call or else the hunter will be attacked by other birds and that could prove to be quite inconvenient.

Since there are lots of different laws and regulations that govern bird hunting, it's very important to find out what the rules are where you are going to be. After all, you wouldn't want to break the rules and get in trouble, would you? Of course, you don't.

Do not make the calls of a male bird - Most hunters are normally on the lookout for male birds and thus making its call can make you vulnerable to mistakenly being shot at by these hunters. Therefore, it is a better idea to make the hen calls instead for your safety. Be Vigilant - Always keep a careful watch on the activities of other hunters in the vicinity. If you see anyone around, do call out to them and make your presence be known so that they are more careful also.

Nevertheless, take your shot when the bird is at close range. You should know when to stop purring and take your shot. The sound will probably scare the other birds away. All the birds will run in all directions, so it is important that you mark your target before you start shooting. Do not get tempted to kill other birds as this will result in a never-ending chase of running birds and you might end up with one too many for your freezer.

Shoot only if you are very sure and after actually spotting a bird, else you might end up making a mistake and shooting a fellow hunter. In conclusion, you can see that there is a need to take all the above precautions for a safe bird hunt and accident-free experience.
