The Importance Of Surfboard Socks And Other Equipment

By Steven Johnson

Surfers, like any other serious hobbyist, know that you must protect your investment. When you leave your equipment lying around the beach or garage at home, you are putting it in a position that it could be easily damaged. Having surfboard socks and other types of protective devices will make sure you do not damage it in transit, keep it clean and sand free, and make sure it survives both short and long travel distances.

There are a couple of types available. The first is the sock that provides basic protection and can be used in conjunction with the other types. The bag is a step up and has some padding. The most protective device is called the coffin because of its size. Using them for the various levels needed is a good idea to protect your investment.

The type of protection the sock provides is from everyday use. When storing the board, it can get dusty and the wax can dry and chip. Having the board in a sock will help protect it from the elements. When putting it in the vehicle to head to the beach, this is very least protection needed. Other options should be used with the sock and not without.

Bags provide minimal padding needed for transportation. These are made to keep the bag cool in the sun and keep the board protected. The padding is enough to do the job when you're heading to the beach or traveling in an RV or other personal transport. Thanks to the padding, a little jostling won't do any damage to the board. If you are leaving it out in the sun, you need to put the sock back on and put the board in the bag for protection.

Coffins, or thicker bags, are the final step. These are made for travel. They're big and hold many boards. While each board should have its own sock within the coffin, these will have much more padding than the bag level. They can help protect them from baggage handlers and scanners at airports when you're flying from one beach area of the world to another.

Logos and other custom designs are very popular amongst professional surfers. The sponsors will usually pay for the larger bags and coffins and include their logo along with the design for the surfer. Those that are not professional can also have their own brand included to show off how cool and serious they are about surfing.

Some more industrious surfers may make their own. It's not that hard if you have some basic sewing skills. Pick the colors and material that you want to use and cut it to size and shape. Sew it together and try it out. Using Lycra instead of cotton provides a nice flexible material so if your sewing skills are a bit off it should still stretch over the board and provide a nice snug fit.

Knowing how important it is to protect your equipment is the first sign of a serious surfer. The sun, sand, and transportation all provide opportunities for damage. By taking your investment seriously, you can make it last a lot longer and have less maintenance over its life. The bags and coffins are both designed for specific purposes and use. By having the right protection with your own logo, you'll be in the game a lot longer.
