They have been called the best, but to be honest, I had to leave some trails off the list that I would put up against any of these. I left these because they offer something for everybody. The Central US has so many incredible trails to offer I recommend you try to get on as many as you can. This list is a good place to start.
Waldo Canyon in Colorado. If you bike for the views and the spectacle of it all, this trail is an absolute must for you. The views will quite literally take your breath away. The view from the top is above the treeline and gives you sense that you are looking down from heaven at the most beautiful place on earth. After that feeling, the ride down is extremely exhilarating.
Colorado, Palmer Park. Colorado Springs is one of my favorite towns so I may be a little bit biased here. Palmer Park has something for everyone with trails for beginners and rides that experts will not find disappointing. The best part is that all the maps of Palmer Park are incomplete. You can easily find yourself lost if only for a few minutes. There aren't many places left in the continental US where you can say they have haven't been mapped completely. Take advantage of this one before Google Maps gets around to it.
Wyoming, Jackson. The Cache Creek to Game Creek Loop is a little southeast of Jackson. At the start it will seem a bit elementary and common. About 2 miles in you will start to realize how special this trail is. This varied plants, vegetation and wildlife that inhabit this trail make each ride through it a new discovery. As far as skill level goes, this trail will work for everybody but it a little more challenging if you do it backwards. For one of the most beautiful rides in the world, check out this trail.
MOAB in Utah. The MOAB Brand trails in Moab, UT are named for the 4 different letters in the town's name. Starting with M, the easiest trail, and working their way to B, the most difficult, these trails provide a skills challenge no matter what your skill level. If you're a beginner, stick to the rocky terrain of the M trail. For the expert, take the hair pin turns of the B. Most people are somewhere in between and will a great time on the O and A trails. Moab is an otherworldly town not to be missed.
Barton Creek Greenbelt in Austin, Texas. Austin has seen a lot of change of the last decade or so. It has gone from a quirky, weird college town to one of the fastest growing cities in all of the US. The people of Austin have worked hard to maintain that quirky weirdness though. It is a great city and if you can make this trip during the Austin City Limits Music Festival held every September, I highly recommend it. The Barton Creek Greenbelt can be inconsistent in some spots but if you are willing to deal with the trails imperfections, it is the best urban trail in the country. So what if you have to walk a little in some spots? If you hit the trail with an Austin state of mind you will have an absolute blast and that is what bike riding is supposed to be all about.
I'm sure there are more trails out there that are amazing and I'll admit, I haven't seen them all. However, I'm sure those who have experienced these trails will agree with their inherent attributes. Happy Biking.
