Dive Computers for Beginners

By Ed J Price

While most Diving Computers are a great alternative to standard Dive Tables, some models just cant beat the old school way of doing things. It is important then to know the basic fundamentals of a Diving Computer to know which one would be most favorable for you. As with everything that concerns diving, its important to always have a back up just in case the need arises. This article will focus on the most common kinds of dive computers as well as a general information overview.

Function

The basic purpose of a dive computer is to track your dive profile. With that information, the computer calculates your remaining No-Decompression Time, as well as directly estimating any decompression stops that maybe necessary. It logs all the information for your later reference. The Diving Computer records how long your dive was, how deep you were in, or how long it has been since youve surfaced.

The Classic Model

With Diving Computers, it is particularly important to know where each one is coming from. Some models have two separate gauge indicators, namely the tank pressure and depth indicator with the classical analog depth gauge. All the information is required by the diver to be manually entered into the dive table so one can know how long one can stay down on a dive.

The Standard Model

Next is the basic model of Dive Computers, which are classified as the most popular standard. It has the same analog tank pressure gauge like the classical model, but this one has been replaced with a digital depth gauge indicator. The LCD screen reads out your downtime limit, as well as how deep you are in (depth indicator). It also computes any nitrogen loading and No-decompression times for you.

For nitrox diving. The extra amount of oxygen that is in the tank youre breathing from can be made by a nitrox calculation. Able to calculate the nitrox tables, with some models it still has the same pressure gauge along with a computer module.

Designs and Layout

Some of these highly relevant models have an extra module attachment spot for compasses with different layouts and designs. Able to function much like a normal watch by telling the time, it still requires a back up external standard pressure gauge. There are wristwatch-style dive computers that calculate and display all your diving needs. Some wristwatch design offers a wrist mounted dive computer specific for diving but these tend to be bigger and more convenient for easier reading. Some models can be connected to your home PC and downloaded for later study.

When it comes to diving, a parting advice for the beginner, it is important to know and choose a conservative and reliable model. A diver begins to see which details are the most important to have on display but this will come with experience which is accumulated over time. A Diving Computer should always come first that is convenient as well as being suited to your diving comfort and safety needs.
