The Nevada City Classic is one of the premiere sporting events in the Sierra foothills, the largest and oldest bicycle race in California, and the second-oldest race in the nation. Professional and amateur cyclists will descend on Nevada City in the Northern Sierra foothills on Father's Day, June 21, 2009, for the 49th running of the Nevada City Classic.
The Tour of Nevada City is a big event in Nevada City. On the day of the race, the city's population of 3001 swells by several thousand spectators, who line the course in front of old vintage Victorian homes as they cheer the cyclists while they negotiate a fast, hilly and technical course. The streets of the historic district are draped with flags and bunting giving you a feel that the Nevada City Classic is a race for the strong as they maneuver their way up the steep hills.
The Nevada City Bicycle Classic draws spectators and height of passion that only can be found in Nevada City.
In the early sixties, Charlie Allert, a bike enthusiasm launched the first Nevada City Classic, it was originally "The Tour of Nevada City" but cyclists now know it as the Nevada City Classic, the "toughest one day bicycle tour in America."
