The Habitats And Species Of Desert Sheep

By Bernadette Mendoza

Vast arid landscapes with rough ragged mountains are not normally associated with the grazing grounds of sheep. Normally they are found in lush green fields in countries such as Wales and New Zealand, and equally they are normally hornless, stocky and with thick woolly coats. There are other species that have evolved to live in harsh environments, and they are known collectively as desert sheep.

These types of species are found in arid rocky climes in North America, and in North Africa. They have adapted to their adverse surroundings and although there vary considerably one common feature of these desert dwellers are their large horns. Sadly due to over hunting and human invasion of their habitat their numbers have dwindled, with some species believed to be extinct.

The Egyptian Aoudad also known as the Egyptian Barbary Sheep is found in the remote area of Gilf Kebir on the boarder of Egypt and Libya. This area was bought into the public eye when it was captured on film in the blockbuster epic 'The English Patient'.

Scientifically this plateau made up of sandstone is very interesting to geologists and zoologists. It is also important for historians as paintings dating back thousands of years were discovered in caves showing an era when the area was inhabited by humans and many animals both domesticated and wild.

The livestock shown in these paintings include long horned beasts which could possibly be linked to the sheep residing there today. For some years no species were detected and sadly it was concluded that this sub species was extinct, but after several researches were commissioned it has now been discovered that numbers are increasing.

The Auodad species was introduced into Northern Mexico and the United States. It has become known as the Desert Big Horn. The original species can be divided into six sub species which from studies are reported to live in small groups across Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia in the Northern Africa quarter.

Both African and American sub species have evolved into a sturdy breed similar to other big horns. Both male and females have the characteristic large curled horns as their counterparts, which they use as tools to find food. They can survive with little or no water for extended periods of time, are very alert which is a development against predators, and are known for speed and agility. Read more about: desert Sheep
