Suggestions For Selecting And Using Pellet Guns

By Alf Orans

When buying pellet guns for the first time, there are several considerations that should be kept in mind prior to and after the purchase. There are legal issues that should be checked before the purchase. The style and purpose also have a big impact on the usefulness of the gun that is purchased. The result can be hours of fun, small game hunting, and target shooting.

There are many reasons and uses for these guns. There are those who will use them to hunt small game, such as rabbits and squirrels. Others will use them solely for target shooting and fun. There are many contests available for those that have a passion for the weapons and a flair for competitions.

The legal issues need to be considered prior to purchase. Since they are often classified as weapons, you need to be sure you are following the appropriate regulatory laws when buying and using them. They often come with a red tip that should be left in place. This helps law enforcement recognize them as a non-lethal weapon. Many of them have the same appearance as their high-caliber cousins and can be considered a major threat when viewed without the red safety tip in place.

The two types available are long barrel and pistol. The long barrel is the same as the rifle. These are more accurate when using them for target shooting or game hunting. The pistol has grown in popularity because it is much more challenging for accurate target shooting.

CO2 cartridges provide the propulsion. The guns are sometimes referred to as air guns. The high pressure air in the cartridges is released to propel the pellet at a higher velocity than pump action provides. The pump action can still build the pressure enough for target shooting and game hunting. The frustration is the pump action losing the pressure and having to build it back up manually at inopportune moments.

Pump actions have two purposes. The original pump action often required many pumps to build the pressure. The single action pump usually has the CO2 cartridge and is simply loading more ammunition. However, the multiple pumps were the original style and may be preferred by those seeking authenticity.

The ammunition that is used comes in many styles. There are pointed, flat, and hollowed points. These are similar to regular bullets. Since the pellets are being pushed by air pressure, the back end is usually a flared out hollow end. This allows the air to catch it and push it through the barrel. The flared end fits perfectly withing the barrel to prevent air from flowing around the pellet.

Pellet guns have been used for years for small game hunting, target practice, and general fun. The ammunition is much less expensive than that of regular firearms. When looking to buy one, it is important to be aware of any local or state laws that may regulate the purchase and use. Keep the orange tip in place so any observer can tell it is not the lethal style weapon it may look like.
