How to Safely Store Your Gun

By Michael Denton

Purchasing a gun is a huge responsibility, and there are a lot of gun owners out there who are well versed in gun safety. If you have just purchased a gun for the first time, but feel like you have got your gun safety rules memorized, think again and consider whether or not you know how to properly store your weapon. If you are not as well versed in how to safely store your weapon, then here are some tips that you should follow to the letter.

One of the biggest rules in gun safety is to never assume that a gun is unloaded until you check the weapon yourself. When you are storing your weapon, there is an extension to this rule. You should never ever store your weapon while it is loaded. This is a rule that you have to keep in mind every time you take out your weapon or put it away.

You should always go the extra mile to ensure that you have not stored your weapon loaded. You should always double check your weapon for ammunition before you put it away. And you should always inspect your weapon whenever you take it out, even if you are pretty sure that you have taken the ammunition out. Another tried and true method for you to employ to make sure you do not store your weapon while it is loaded is to store your weapon and your ammunition in completely separate places. This will help you maintain the mindset that your ammo goes in one area while your gun goes in the other and you will check your gun for ammo out of pure habit.

It is also important that you never store your gun anywhere that is out in the open. This is another factor that leads to people being injured by guns every year. Children especially are harmed from ignoring this rule. You need to store your gun in an area that is, for the most part, out of sight. For example, you should store your weapons in either a closet or a drawer.

If you own either a rifle or a shotgun, then a gun rack is definitely in order for you. You may think of a gun rack as just something nice to have, but if you store your weapon by just leaning it against a wall, then you are leaving it open for it to fall down, and that means that your gun could be damaged. And if you have made the mistake of leaving your weapon loaded, then your weapon could actually discharge. Storing your guns on a gun rack gives them a stable place that they can hang without you having to worry about them falling over.

So you see that while some of these tips are fairly common knowledge, they cannot be stressed enough. There are some other tips that are available out there. For example, you should not store your weapon in a humid area. If you want to be sure that you are properly storing your weapons, then you should follow the tips to the letter.
