Do You Require Safety Vests?

By Liam David

All our family members are into sports. We have many activities to choose from, either biking, jogging, swimming, hiking or playing tennis. We love having an active lifestyle and be physically fit. Since we want our lifestyle to remain that way, we make sure that we take safety precautions, particularly when we go biking and jogging on the road. When my son was little, it was one of the family's favorite things to do - ride bikes around the neighborhood, even into the night. Even if this wasn't that long ago, we wore no protective gear. We simply got on our bikes and whisked away! However, things nowadays are different.

I hate to say it, but it is risky out there - cars running at high velocity and recklessness. Whenever you're in your car, practice defensive driving, the same goes for biking and jogging. I prefer to do these activities on the back roads and hills, but they have their dangers, too. So to minimize the possibility of an injury, I insist that all family members wear a helmet, and a reflective vest, especially if the activity is at dawn, dusk or evening. Oftentimes, we avoid the road at nights.

There are more precautionary measures you can take to ensure your safety on the road. Apparently the purpose is to prevent getting bumped and sideswiped on the road. You want to be as visible as possible, so adding a headlight to your bike will help. There are also helmet lights that aid you on your level of vision so you can be aware that the driver of the approaching car sees you. There are a lot of countries that require bikes to install bells, so putting a horn is a nice plan. Slowly hit on the brakes in case you have to leave the road to avoid getting run into by an approaching car. Be careful of drivers emerging from parking lots, don't drive on pedestrian lanes, don't oppose traffic, at a stop light stay beside the car and not behind it so that other motorists can see you, look at your side mirrors before taking a turn, at all times look behind you first before you move, do not crisscross in traffic or parking lots, and never forget to use signals before turning. If you ride at night, make certain you have a headlight and a blinking taillight. Wear a reflective vest; choose wide streets, slow streets, and back streets on the weekends. Obeying the traffic laws and making sure you have the proper protective gear and equipment will give you the best possible odds of avoiding injury.

A lot of the safety instructions for biking are the same for jogging Wear a gear with reflectors, take off your headphones (applicable to biking also), and be alert always of your environment. When you ride your bike or jog on the streets, you are also prone to respiratory problems because of the air pollution from cars. Very soon, a great amount of carbon monoxide has already entered into your lungs including dust and fragments. Nevertheless, it is sometimes the only choice people have.

Therefore the most excellent choice is to safeguard yourself as much as possible. One of the best tips is make certain that you stay visible on the road and the way to do that is wear a reflective vest, either orange or yellow in color.
