Fly Fishing in New Zealand is worldclass trout fishing. Keen fly fishers from around the world return to this beautiful country year on year for their fly-fishing fix. The tiny population of NZ, its remote location, untouched alpine wilderness and lack of pollution make it a premium habitat for brown and rainbow trout as well as salmon. In most areas the fishing season runs from beginning of April to the end of May.

This is just a few of many popular and proven fishing destinations in New Zealand.

Motueka

Found close to the city of Nelson at the very top of the South Island the Motueka River and its tributaries run from the eastern slopes of the Kahurangi Ranges and National Park and the northerly slopes of the Nelson Ranges National Park.

The Motueka River constantly tops New Zealand Fish and Games list of healthiest fly fishing rivers. The Nelson region also boasts that it is one of the sunniest regions in the country Great fishing and impressive scenery.

Murchison

Also near the top of the southern island the Murchison Valley is around one and a half hours south of Nelson. It is on the southern slopes of Kahurangi NP and the western side of the Nelson Lakes NP. Famous for the wonderful sight brown trout fishing the Murchison and its feeder streams are also classic dry fly waters.

Nelson Lakes

The impressive scenery of the Nelson Lakes region makes wandering these valleys a joy even if you're not fishing successfully. The entrance to the park is the small alpine town of St Arnaud under 2 hours drive south of Nelson. The fishing is focused on brown trout populations in the various rivers and lakes of the area.

Hamner Valley

The Hamner Valley is nestled two hours north of Christchurch close to the eastern coast of the southern Island. The pristine alpine wilderness is on the eastern watershed of the Southern Alps that form the spine of the South Island. Encircled by spectacular scenery the Hamner Valley is popular brown trout destination.

Westland

Tucked between the west coast and the Southern Alps on the South Island, Westland has over 11 lakes and 30 streams that are considered excellent brown trout habitat. Though Westland is a particularly wet environment on a clear day the landscape is wonderful and the fishing excellent.

MacKenzie Country

In the high country of the South Island and targeted around the townships of Tekapo, Twizel, and Omarama, McKenzie Country is the roof of the South Island and the home of Mt Cook, the highest mountain in the country. This high mountain plateau is crossed by hydropower channels, streams, streams and lakes boasting many trophy trout.

Queenstown

Queenstown is a popular mountain resort town in the middle of the South Island. It is famous for snow sports and adventure activities. The town sits on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and is surrounded by the stunning scenery of The Remarkables, Coronet Peak and the Crown Range. There is a multitude of rivers, streams and lakes in the surrounding area offering wonderful brown trout fishing. Lake Wakatipu also offers rainbow trout and salmon fishing.

Fiordland

Fiordland is in Southland at the bottom of the south island. So named for the various flooded valleys on the west coast of this area. Fiordland is also prime brown trout habitat with many rivers and lakes offering excellent fishing. Rainbow and Salmon are caught in Lake Manipouri.

The primary township for the area is Te Anau.

Rotorua

The Rotorua area in the middle of the North Island is amongst the countries primary rainbow trout destinations. Trophy rainbow and brown trout can be caught in the 15 lakes and many rivers and streams of the area. Rotorua is also a resort town surrounded by lakes and geo thermal activity. The area also has great fishing in winter months with a great many of the lakes open.

Lake Taupo

The Taupo region is one of New Zealand's more internationally famous trout fisheries. Much of the area is open for fishing year round with gigantic populations of rainbow and brown trout on offer. Over 30 rivers feed into the lake and thespawning runs of the rainbow trout in the winter months are quite famous and very productive. Taupo township at the north end of the lake and Turangi in the south are the major gateways.
