By Shamcey Gray

Providing all the advantages of a regular bicycle, e-bikes are one of newest and promising technological innovations for the improvement of urban transportation. They are, generally, regular bicycles that feature an electric motor to provide additional assistance. That is, the pedal can be used normally and the motor may be used as assistance on rough terrains, or to make riding easier, the motor can be used all the time. Hence, they eliminate the lack of power of regular bicycles-which is one of the more serious drawbacks of said vehicles.

Aside from its motor power, many ask if there are other advantages that can be derived from the use of e-bikes that can't be acquired from the use of regular conventional bicycles or cars. The answer is yes. The e-bike's motor provides many a number of other benefits that are advantageous not only to the users, but also to the general public and the environment as well.

Among the many personal benefits that can be acquired from the use of e-bikes is a means of regular exercise. Many studies showed that bikers using e-bikes use their bike once every day, while those using conventional bicycles bikes only about once or twice every week. As such, regular use means more exercise for the rider. Another benefit of e-bikes is their faster door-to-door journey time as they allow users to avoid the problem of congestion especially in many urban areas.

A number of economic benefits can also be derived from e-bikes. As e-bikes don't require the users to have a license, nor have the bike registered or insured, the bikers save a great deal of time and money from those mentioned documents. Also, the maintenance cost of e-bikes is lesser than ordinary cars as they don't use fuel, nor require any parking or public transport fees. Aside from these economic benefits, there are also environmental benefits that may be acquired from e-bikes. As was said, these bikes don't require fuel; as such, they don't burn fossil fuels that release harmful carbon emissions to the environment. Also, they require less material, fuel, and infrastructure; hence, they are significant in reducing resource consumption.

Despite this number of advantages, the use of e-bikes also has some drawbacks. First is that e-bikes are much heavier than conventional bikes making them unfitting for transport, say for example in a car. Also, as they feature more technologically advanced attributes, e-bikes are also more expensive than regular bikes. Moreover, as they run on a rechargeable motor, their range and speed are limited. With many models having a limited range of only 15-40 miles per charges, e-bikes are not suitable for long road trips and distances.

Indeed great technological innovations that may be significant in changing our way of life, e-bikes are great investments one will not think twice on purchasing. With the many benefits that may be acquired from their use, one will definitely enjoy having one. Nonetheless, caution should also be exercised when purchasing one especially with the number of disadvantages also entailed in the use of one.
