Bicycle Selection

By Gene Fink

Many people consider getting a bicycle. But there are also many folks who don't know how to choose the right bikes, and they end up getting bikes that are wrong for them. Here are some tips on good bicycle selection.

City bikes or a hybrid are the best choices. These bicycles are the type that are somewhere between a mountain bike and a road bike. A city bike is made for regular use around town, or regular use period. Mountain bikes, however, are exactly as their name implies. They are meant for rougher road.

Once that's settled, you have to choose a bike with a comfortable seat. Also find a bike that has handlebars that will allow you to maintain an upright position. The choice is entirely yours when it comes to a basket, fenders, or a rack.

You then have to make sure that the bike would fit you. You can determine this by straddling the frame of the bike and checking whether your crotch area is at least two inches above the middle bar. Most bike seats can be adjusted so your knees will be slightly bent when the bike pedal is at its lowest point. You'll know if the seat is too high if there is too much side movement in your hips when you ride. You'll have to adjust the seat to bring it down. Most salespeople will help you with your bicycle adjustments if you ask.

There are many offers for extras when you buy a bike. Just choose them carefully. It's likely that you'll be offered toe clips or metal cages for your pedals. These toe clips are designed to keep your feet in place, in constant contact with the pedals. It's helpful in preventing knee injuries. But you should be careful. It might take you some time to get used to them.
