If you want to go mountain biking, you must have the correct type of bike. Knowledge of the following parts of a mountain bike will come in handy in certain situations.
Bottom Bracket. The bottom bracket keeps the crankset secured to the frame of the bicycle.
Brake Cable. The brake mechanism is operated from the brake lever by means of the brake cable.
Brake Lever. This lever is located on the handlebars and it is used to enable the braking mechanism. The left lever is to activate the front brake and the right lever is to activate the rear brake.
Chain. Circular links that are attached to each other to form a round chain that will transfer power to the cogs and cause the bike to move forward.
Chain Ring. It is the circular ring with teeth that keeps the chain securely attached to the crank.
The Crank. The crank is the lever that is attached to the pedal and the bottom bracket at both ends. The biker's power is transferred to the chain rings by the crank.
Deraillleur. The derailleur is the device that enables the biker to shift the chain to the different cogs.
Down Tube. The tube that connects the bottom bracket and the stem.
Front Shock. The shock absorber at the front fork.
Handlebar. That part of the bike with handgrips that can be found at the top of the stem. This handlebar is the biker's steering device when the bike is in motion.
Headset. This is the mechanism on the frame's front that helps to connect the stem and handlebars to the front fork.
The Hub. Found in the center of the wheel group that is connected to the rim by the spokes.
Idler Pulley. This keeps the chain tight by adding spring tension to the rear derailleur's bottom pulley.
The Nipple. This holds the rim to the end of the spoke via a threaded receptacle.
The Pedal. This is the part that you use to pedal on and it is attached to the crank.
Rear Shock. The rear shock refers to the suspension system at the rear tire of a bicycle.
The Rim. This is a ring usually made of a metal alloy that is connected by the spokes to hub.
The Saddle. The saddle, also called the seat, is where the biker sits.
Seat Post. The seat post is where the saddle is attached to.
Skewer. This is the metallic rod that attaches the wheel to the frame dropouts by going through the hub.
Spindle. This is what the crank arms are attached to via a free rotating axle and it is also a component of the bottom bracket.
The Spokes. Thick metal wires that are attached at one end to the wheel hub and to the rim at the other end.
Stem. This piece secures the steering tube to the handlebar.
The Wheel Hub. The wheel's center part is called the hub connected by the spokes to the rim.
