Don't get lost - get navigation equipment for your bike!

By Zachary Metcalfe

What you don't want to happen when you are speeding down a trail is to get left behind because you are unsure which fork in the road to take. Avoid this situation by getting one of the latest GPS systems specifically designed for use by mountain bikers. These combine all the usual features of a GPS suitable for road running with a map base and various capabilities that will enhance your trail ride.

You will also want a durable and weatherproof unit that fits well on your handlebars and has features that are easy to see and use. A good mapbase with accurate, detailed maps is also an essential element of a good GPS system suitable for making the right decision quickly no matter what the weather throws at you.

Obviously, you could use a combination of methods but I suspect that if you are a technophile, once you find a user friendly GPS system, you will prefer to use this unless the map base does show your chosen location. There are different levels of technology that you can purchase depending upon your financial resources. You should also check if the model has detailed colour maps loaded or you are required to purchase the maps at an additional cost.

Another alternative is to use a map and compass and find a local outdoor centre that runs courses for improving your navigation skills. A useful skill if you don't want total reliance on batteries and technology. If this appeals to you, then you might want to buy a map holder. There are some excellent ones on the market that allow a full 360 rotation of the map such as the MBO - 2 Rotating Map Holder.

If you decide to go for a mountain bike specific GPS system, then don't forget to look out for features such as waterproof, durability, battery life and any zoom features. Some models have a touch screen for speedy use; however don't forget that if you, your bike and the equipment are likely to be covered in mud on a regular basis then a touch screen may not be such a good idea!
