What is the appeal of a Felt bike?

By Josep Batistuta

Felt has existed in some form or another since the late 1980s, although it was relaunched in 2001 as an independent company. Over the next decade it manufactured some of the most popular bikes available - but just what makes Felt so popular? A large part of Felt's appeal is no doubt due to its quality. Felt strives to make the highest quality bikes possible, which is made clear by the company's stated mission: 'to design, develop, and deliver the best bicycles in the world'.

Felt is named after the company's founder, Jim Felt. In the late 1980s Jim Felt was a motocross mechanic. After being asked by a motocross racer to build a bicycle suitable for a triathlon, Felt soon discovered he was able to optimise the design of existing bikes so that the rider would be in the most aerodynamic position possible. The company's interesting origins are no doubt also a reason that Felt bikes are so popular.

This twist of fate gives the company an interesting history, but it is the features in bicycles built now that cycling enthusiasts are really interested in. However, experience in motocross will have undoubtedly given Jim Felt an interesting perspective on bicycle design that other manufacturers lack.

Such experiments helped lead to innovations such as the InsideOut Internally Optimized Molding process and the Dynamic Monocoque Construction technique. Innovations such as these has led to bikes that are capable of competing at the Olympics - look out for the updated TK1 model in London this summer.

Felt bikes are well loved because despite the company's global presence it still comes across as being fuelled by the moment of inspiration that led to Jim Felt making his first bike for Johnny O'Mara. With improvements to bikes coming at an alarming rate, the love affair between fans of high-end bikes and Felt seems set to continue.
