City Bikes: A Better Form of Transportation?

By Ken Godberson

Transportation in the city can be an utter nightmare. Car traffic can be downright claustrophobic at times in the city. Let's not even begin to go into all the costs it requires to maintain a car: gas, check-ups, insurance. The subway may seem like a viable alternative, but even that has becomes very costly in the long run. However, there is an alternative method of transportation that seems like it may be quite valid for city living.

While visiting New York City about a month ago, I noticed something interesting. Many people were using bicycles as their central method of transportation. As I watched this, I began to think of the benefits of this in a city. Even if people implemented a method of traveling to work half by car, half by bike, you can not only reduce traffic in city streets but also reduce carbon emissions.

Travel by city bike also has many health benefits. Biking burns off calories and increases the heart rate, strengthening it. This reduces the chances of coronary disease. Frequent use of a bicycle also does wonders for the legs. Apart from strengthening leg muscles, the motions made when biking also helps improve coordination and balance.

We have all these benefits of using a city bike, but what we have not discussed is which the best bike is? There are many types of bikes for you to select from. What is important is that you know your necessities. Are you constantly carrying things and need a basket? How often do you have water? Do you have a baby? These are questions that need to be considered when choosing a city bike.

Living in the city is a vastly different beast than a suburb. Getting around is crucial. This is why you should give serious consideration to switching over to a city bike. It has many societal, environmental, and medical benefits for the rider. So get out there and start biking!
