Beginner Skateboarders Alert - Do You Know These Hot Tips?

By Clifford Gill

Skateboarders who know what they're doing make it all look incredibly easy. Right? Seems the only thing you need to do is push-off with one foot, then you maintain your balance. And surfing? That's no problem, all you're doing is standing still. But if you try it, you'll immediately discover skateboarding only "looks" easy. You'll need to bring your skill and practice if you ever hope to do the tricks you've watched others do. What follows are some expert tips to decrease your learning time and increase your potential.

Please try to use the proper equipment. It can feel awkward to wear the safety gear: elbow/knee pads, helmet, shin guards. It really won't take long to appreciate that gear, though - if you're new to skateboarding. But you will discover your travel time will be less than your recovery time. Just like it was when you learned to ride that bike. Properly stopping your board will most likely give you more troubles than you want. In time, you may decide to lose some of the protective gear. But it's still a great idea to keep the helmet on. You can have a serious fall, so the helmet really is a good idea.

Don't be concerned about skating slowly. You'll see a lot of beginner skateboarders trying to do those cool tricks before they really have the proper skills. The end result is usually the skater getting hurt. Being able to skate down the street without falling doesn't mean you have the right skills to execute tricks. Hopping with your board is a lot harder than you think. Start skating slowly and try to be steady, then when you're ready go for longer distances. Learn how to quickly start and gain speed and then stop smoothly without falling down. If you can skate long distances, smoothly, and can avoid hitting other people on the streets, then it's cool to start thinking about trying some tricks.

Get to know the skaters language and terminology, and learn the different kinds of boards that are used. Not all boards are the same, and there are a lot of differences. Learn what the differences are and the reasons for them. You'll find it'll help to be able to talk about skating in skater's terms. Then you'll be able to ask for help if you need it and be able to understand it.

You know there's more to skating than standing and riding a flat piece of board. You'll see many people commuting to work on skateboards in cities, and they're just fun to ride. Have an open mind to learning, and that will be the trick that will make you better.
